NEW GLASGOW – Happy customers are why Cindy Thompson likes her new job.
Thompson is one of four employees at Pet Valu in the West Side Plaza in New Glasgow, which opened on Tuesday.
“It really is fun. Our customers are so open. They’re great. They’re happy. What pet owner isn’t happy and in love with their pets? It’s their babies, their kids,” she said Wednesday.
The store stocks specialty pet foods, treats, toys and grooming tools and features a self-serve dog wash.
The new location enabled manager Jeff Callaghan to return to Pictou County after moving away 20 years ago. He transferred from the Amherst location as the company was looking for an experienced manager in New Glasgow.
Callaghan noted that they intend to set up a partnership with SPCA, fostering animals to help get them adopted – a program that saw approximately 60 cats adopted from Pet Valu’s Amherst location in two-and-a-half years, he said.
He said they’re also going to work with CARMA and other groups for different fundraising opportunities.
Pet Valu announced in November that they were seeking a local owner for a franchise location, but Callaghan noted that it is a corporate store.
Pet Valu has 16 locations in Nova Scotia and another 10 in the rest of the Atlantic provinces. The company has more than 600 stores in Canada and the United States.
