HALIFAX - A year-and-a-half after leaving the Progressive Conservative caucus, Hants-West MLA Chuck Porter has a new boss.

Premier Stephen McNeil announced Feb. 17 Porter is joining the Liberal caucus.

“Mr. Porter supports the direction our government is taking,” said  McNeil in a media release. “He believes his constituents share that confidence.”

Porter was first elected in 2006, succeeding 28-year Tory MLA Ron Russell.

When he left the PC caucus in June 2014, Porter said he would sit as an Independent MLA.

"The positive side of it now is I’m free to speak to various government departments and work with ministers to ensure the issues and concerns get addressed that we have here in Hants West,” he told the Hants Journal at the time.

“Mr. Porter has done what he can to ensure that the views of those he represents are heard and reflected in the work of the legislature," McNeil added in the media release

The Liberal release said Porter is "excited" about the move.

“It is important to the people that I represent that I take their needs and concerns to Halifax,” said  Porter. “I believe I can best do that by being a member of the Liberal caucus.”

No Liberal has been elected to the seat since  Robert D. Lindsay held the riding for eight years from 1970 to 1978.
